The novel “A Clockwork Orange” by Anthony Burgess is, as described by the author’s website, “concerned with the conflict between the individual and the state, the punishment of young criminals, and the possibility or otherwise of redemption.”

Various book covers are very pantomime to the aesthetic of the ’60’s, when the novel was published, or are very literal to the symbolism in the novel, such as the penguin classic edition that shows a glass of milk. For this project I wanted to create an updated and more subtle nod to the novel.

To achieve this, I wanted the title to be embossed and coated with a spot gloss to emulate the visual look of milk, without being literal. For the author’s name and highlights, I chose a very 60’s inspired color of orange as an homage to the era. My fonts were chosen to reflect a fun ’60’s teenager, but with a violent dystopic undercurrent. Lastly, I wanted the overall look to be very minimalistic to emulate the government’s intolerance of dissent in the novel and emphasize how the protagonist associates the color white and brightness as threatening and menacing.

This was a self-guided personal project that is not directly associated with the novel or penguin classics.
